A Time to Conserve, Part I
California's wild fires are the big environmental news this week, but I still cannot stop thinking about Atlanta's water shortage. In case you haven't heard, a big part of the Southeast has been in the grips of a severe drought for the past two years. According to some reports, things are so serious that Atlanta is down to about a three month's supply of drinking water. Officials are calling for conservation, but what if it is not enough? What if the faucets of the Southeast run dry? Based on the stories that I have read, there is no plan B.
If the city of Atlanta really does run out of water what will the nation's response be? Will the city simply be sacrificed the way New Orleans was after Katrina? Will George Bush say, "No water? Let them drink Coke!" Will the federal government make any effort at all to save the region, or is this the way the American republic will crumble - one city at a time, each due to different, foreseeable and preventable disasters?
Part of the reason that the Southeast's drought is so fascinating is that it is a perfect metaphor for so many other unfolding events in our modern society. The pattern is by now well known: A looming problem is identified, warning bells are sounded, but no action is taken to address the problem. For a long time nothing happens, so the threat is presumed to be overblown. Those who sound warnings are ridiculed as Chicken Littles. But suddenly - seemingly out of the blue - the problem comes home to roost with a vengeance. Disaster strikes. Everyone is caught "off guard" because warnings fell on deaf ears for so many years.
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 were like that. The intelligence community had plenty of warning that such an attack was coming, yet the government failed to properly prepare.
The sub-prime housing bust was like that. People who were paying attention could see the disaster that was brewing. Now it looks like it could threaten the very existence of the financial system.
Social Security is like that. The "trust fund" has been raided, the money borrowed/stolen to run day-to-day operations of the government. One day the bills will come due and to everyone's shock and amazement, there will be no money left to pay them.
The destruction of the dollar is like that. Everyone knows it is coming, but what is being done to prevent its decline? Gradually, Americans are becoming paupers on our own soil.
Peak oil, global warming (sunny and 80 degrees in Boston today), the inevitable stock market crash - they're all like that.
But worst of all is the gradual disappearance of America's constitutional republic itself. Gradually, with hardly anyone noticing, America has become a country that taps people's phones, throws people in jail without charges, tortures people, and gives the President the power to declare anyone - including you or me - an unlawful enemy combatant, without evidence, due process or any legal recourse whatsoever.
Is it still America? Like with Atlanta's severe drought, global warming, peak oil, social security, the declining dollar, etc - everything still more or less looks normal now. If it looks normal, everything must be okay, right?
* * *
In our quest for short-term profits and pleasure, Americans have sacrificed lasting value for short term pleasure. Most of us work harder than in recent memory, yet we are no richer, no happier and have nothing of true value to show for the binge. Most Americans assume that the government should be taking care of these things for us, but if the government is doing anything at all, it is likely making things worse by hosting a corporate feeding frenzy to "address the problems."
The biggest lesson from the federal government's response to Katrina is that we're all on our own. Who will care for you in retirement, save your house from foreclosure, come up with alternate transportation solutions, and restore the ideal of the American republic itself? It won't be the government. If there is any hope at all for solutions to these problems, they will come from you and I working together in our communities for a better future. The time has come to act, because waiting around for solutions is the certain road to disaster.
America is in for a multitude of shocks. We have been sleepwalking through the 80's, 90's and 00's, doing what we do best - consuming. But the dictionary definition of the word reads: Consume (v) To destroy or expend by use; use up, devour; to spend wastefully, to waste away.
That sounds about the size of things. The silver lining in this is that when people become threatened enough, we do begin to wake up and act. We recognize once again the value of what we are about to lose, and begin conservation efforts. We begin to conserve.
Author Naomi Wolf, not generally known in political circles as a conservative, warns us in The End of America - Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot just how grave the danger is to our republic. Our society is closing down, following a blueprint set down by fascist and totalitarian regimes throughout history. When she recently spoke in Boston, she said, "We need to get back to the Constitution and restore the rule of law!" These words, coming from the mouth of a diehard liberal Democrat, are identical to those of Republican Ron Paul, the most conservative man in the 2008 presidential race!
Finally! Something that Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives can agree on! We are losing our republic. It is slipping away before our very eyes. Things must be getting pretty bad if people from such differing political backgrounds are joining together in this common fight.
And things are getting bad. After having studied closed, authoritarian regimes, Ms. Wolf distilled a ten-point list, or recipe, that all such regimes pursue:
1. Invoke an internal and external threat
2. Establish secret prisons
3. Develop a paramilitary force
4. Surveil ordinary citizens
5. Infiltrate citizens groups
6. Arbitrarily detain and release citizens
7. Target key individuals
8. Restrict the press
9. Cast criticism as "espionage" and dissent as "treason"
10. Subvert the rule of law.
If you've been following the news, you should be able to go down the list and check most of these off, one by one. I did this recently with a friend: Terrorism, check. Secret prisons, check. Blackwater, check. Wiretapping, check. And so on down the line. If you need help with the rest of them, Ms. Wolf provides ample examples in her book, or in this article she authored at the Guardian UK.
Note that you will find no mention of this book in the American MSM. Ms. Wolf, who became somewhat of a media celebrity after publishing the Beauty Myth in the 1990's, is now suffering from a near complete MSM media blackout of The End of America. She could barely get it published; no mainstream outlets have reviewed it; the news talk shows won't have her on. She did say that she is getting tremendous support on the internet, and from alternative media, such as the website you are reading this article on now. Surprising similarities again to Ron Paul.
Why the media blackout? If the MSM won't talk about it, everything continues to look "normal" about our country on the surface. So why should you care if some "terrorists" are being tortured in secret prisons in far off lands, or if the rule of law is being completely subverted in Iraq? Forget for a moment the moral argument, and simply consider your own self-interest. Ms. Wolf, who has done the research, has the astounding answer: Eventually, these secret prisons, torture tactics, and complete subversion of the rule of law will come home to be turned against ordinary citizens like you and me. It always happens this way. It is simply a matter of time. So you can speak up and fight for those without a voice now, or you can wait until no one is left to fight for you.
The good news is that all is not yet lost. But to save the republic, we all must act swiftly and forcefully. As we all know from experience, the urge to conserve becomes strongest when the threat of loss is most real. Ron Paul has been beating this warning drum for the past 30 years. The public on both sides of the left/right divide is finally starting to wake up. That liberals such as Ms. Wolf are finally beginning to realize the founders' intent with the Second Amendment - the right to keep and bear arms - is an excellent sign.
I urge everyone to read Ms. Wolf's book and pass it on. Call your congressperson and request they support the American Freedom Agenda Act, a bill with wide bi-partisan support (including that of both Ms. Wolf and Dr. Paul) that would restore the Constitution's checks, balances and protections against government abuses.
With our civil liberties quickly eroding in our closing society, we should all begin looking for ways to conserve the ideal of America envisioned by the Founding Fathers.

Market Updates:

To be honest, Gold and
To be honest, Gold and Silver are good money but they don't have the buying power that the goldbugs allege. Consider that in 1910 (pre Federal Reserve), the average house price was $7000 or so. Gold was $20/troy oz. That's 350 oz of gold to buy a house. Today, the average house is $220K, and gold is at $760 /oz. That's around 289 oz to buy a house today. Consider too that both commodities are heavily manipulated; it seems more than coincidence that the derivatives market took off around 15 years ago, and shortly after the stock market and the housing markets really took off. Personally, i think most of the stuff in America is overpriced; I think housing is worth maybe $90K nationwide and gold is worth $300 - $320 per oz. This is also why I have a beef with Peak Oil; as housing prices rose dramatically in 2005, so did petroleum. We really don't know what's going on overseas as far as supplies go. Also, shouldn't gasoline be at $12+/gallon right now?
well. your math is right. in
well. your math is right. in 1910, it cost 350 ozs of gold to buy an average house. Today, it only costs 289 ozs. that's LESS gold to buy the average house. That's far better than holding dollars, don't you think? your conclusion is obviously wrong.
Once city at a time
"The republic will crumble--one city at a time... and then New Orleans and Atlanta are mentioned."
At least one MAJOR city preceeded these by a long shot -- DETROIT.
Detroit used to be America's 6th largest city, with more than 1 million inhabitants, when the US only had 6 cities with 1,000,000+ people. That was not so very long ago, less than a generation.
TODAY, it is a city in RUINS, it does not look much different than a semi-abandoned city in the ex-Soviet Union, or any German city in early 1945.
It's a national disgrace, and the mainstream media do not even touch the issue.
Detroit may (likely) never recover.
Google "ruins of detroit" or "detroit's ruins" for many web sites with multiple pictures.
Its already started long ag, sad, sad, sad.
one city at a time
Look north of Detroit to Flint and you will see why Michael Moore makes movies about your decaying society./ country.
Thanks for the tip
Those are some very interesting pictures.
There is something going on here, the shape-shifting nature of this second great depression...It isn't about Republicans vs. Democrats - it is more of a global class war going on. It is great for those who are rich and can live outside the consequences of their actions. They can take the money that was invested in Detroit, get up and leave and move on to where the money is easier to be made. If American people are impoverished as a result - like so many in the third world - then so be it. Americans are not so special that they cannot be used in the same way, sucked dry, then left for dead like those in the third world. The elite have no allegiance to country, it is only to profits.
War is profitable. Go to bigcharts.com and type in the symbol DFI - the defense industry index. It has simply gone through the roof since this "war on terror" started. The cold war ended and those defense contractors needed a new source of profits - they needed a new enemy - terrorism. Soon, those war on terror tactics will come home to America and the new enemy will be you and I.
We're fucked. This country
We're fucked. This country is a runaway train with no brakes. The engineer is passed out drunk, and there's a giant redwood lying across the tracks, dead ahead. What's worse, there aren't enough honorable men left in this country to fill a thimble.
honorable men
"What's worse, there aren't enough honorable men left in this country to fill a thimble."
What about you?
why so much trust?
Michael, an excellent article, as always. I follow your web site religiously each day. Thanks for the great service.
Here's where we part ways: Ron Paul. I expect your mind is made up and you're convinced about the man bringing the Republic back (to what era, I'm not sure -- the slavery era?). What I don't understand is why you have so much faith in him, when there is so much at stake. Why are you so convinced that he will do the right thing? There is so much that is unclear about him -- unclear enough that the likes of David Duke support him. From what I've read here on your site, you are 180 degrees from these kinds of extremists. But doesn't it say something that he appeals to those people? Doesn't that mean that his message is vague and completely open to interpretation? Not a good sign in my book. And, then there are all the statements he's made about minorities -- statements that I can only see as racist, regardless of how he spins them.
I'm all for getting out of Iraq, but probably not for the same reasons Ron Paul is (again, I can't really tell what his true reasoning is -- he tends to hide behind constitutional rhetoric in my opinion). I want the U.S. out of Iraq because we're killing people. I expect that Ron Paul wants us out of Iraq because being there isn't constitutional. OK, I can agree with that too, but does he really care about the atrocities? I'm not convinced that he does.
Here's an article that I found quite eye-opening. There are others, but this one struck my sense of concern about who this man really is, and what his true agenda is.
The Case Against Ron Paul
Some things you should know before you canonize the guy
http://www.thisisby.us/index.php/content/the_case_against_ron_paul
You call that a case against Ron Paul?
Nina, you call that a case against Ron Paul? The guy who wrote it comes across as an ignorant moron. I read it expecting to find dirt on Ron Paul, but the article only made me want to support Paul even more!
duke
i'd bet duke claims to be a christian
so, i guess jesus is a bad guy too--lol
get real
On Ron Paul
Nina - thank you for writing and giving me the opportunity to tell you why I support Ron Paul. There are so many reasons, I set up a website that is entirely devoted to his bid for President: www.dailypaul.com
I first heard about Ron Paul when I saw him on CNBC, challenging Greenspan on the Federal Reserve. After that, I looked him up and read about his positions, most of which I agree with. I find it unfortunate that people make judgments - not only about him - but about so many without really making a fundamental attempt at understanding.
As a case in point, the article you linked to begins: "Ron Paul is a douche bag. I say this not from any factual knowledge, but rather from an impression gained from observation. It has been remarked that Ron Paul resembles a simple bag that could be used to hold water suitable for douching."
IS THIS WHAT YOU ARE BASING YOUR OPINION ON? I'm very sorry, but this reflects very, very poorly on your judgement. Any piece of writing that begins that way is simply biased. This leads me to believe that you are not serious about about learning more. However, will address your points anyway.
Q: Why do I have faith in Ron Paul?
A: Because I have read extensively his writings and opinions. I have observed him in action. I have checked his record. He is a man of his word. I have met him and interacted with him, his wife and family. They are good, honest, caring people. He had many opportunities to sell out, like most everyone else in Washington, but never has. Here is a short list of why I believe in Ron Paul:
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Q: David Duke supports him - does that make him bad?
A: I do not judge Ron Paul based on his supporters, as he does not choose them. Ron Paul believes in the Constitution, and in our right to free speech. Because of this universal value, he appeals to ALL KINDS of people, including me. The price of free speech is that you might hear some unpleasant things. But only by paying this price can you guarantee that your right to free speech will not be violated. I know hardly anything about David Duke, nor why he supports Ron Paul. What I do know is that I would like to preserve the right of free speech in this great country.
Q: You say: I'm all for getting out of Iraq, but probably not for the same reasons Ron Paul is (again, I can't really tell what his true reasoning is -- he tends to hide behind constitutional rhetoric in my opinion).
A: Ron Paul believes in the just theory of war. He is not a pacifist. If America's national security is threatened, he will fight to protect the country. He served in Vietnam for 5 years. He is against the war because it was never declared, and also because he is a kind and compassionate man. He's a doctor who's brought over 4,000 babies into this world! He hates the idea of so many people - Americans and Iraqis - being senselessly killed. Of course he cares about the atrocities - it pains him deeply.
That article you linked to is terrible. There is no attempt made to understand Dr. Paul, only to slander him. So under your theory, people should now judge me poorly because of the poor quality content that you are reading! Oh no!!!
Seriously, I urge you to really look into Ron Paul and understand him before you criticize him. Check out this link, and read the reasons why other Americans support him: http://dailypaul.com/node/1115
Best regards,
Michael
Ron Paul and taxes
And the comment was, "I support Ron Paul because he has never voted to raise taxes." ( That was the top of a list of many reasons.)
And my answer to this Ron Paul supporter is this is precisely the problem with Ron Paul and his Republican supporters like yourself. Ron Paul should be in favour of raising taxes across-the-board on everything to start to pay for the deficits that are draining the life out of the country and the dollar.
It does not matter that Ron Paul might not have voted for every spending bill. The bills for everything--- for whatever cause, right or wrong, liberal or conservative, Demo or Republican--- are coming due. They are the deficits.
And when the deficits are not paid-down by taxes, they are paid-down by inflation and devaluation and economic collapse.
And by the way, the party that gave us three decades of wreckless defence spending --- now totalling $471 billion per year just for the military alone---was the Republicans. The party that sold the American people on the idea that "deficits don't count" was the Republicans. All of the supplyside snake-oil came from the Republicans; let's be very clear about that. And Ron Paul is guess what: another Republican.
impeachment hypocrisy
Thanks for your response Michael. I've been hesitating to respond because I know that you and the majority of your readers here are completely sold on Ron Paul, and frankly, I doubt if there's anything I could say that might at least make you question your faith in the man. And, yes, that article was a hit piece and the author wasn't trying to be diplomatic, not in the least. I won't defend him, but I do think he makes some very valid points.
But, the reason I'm taking the time to post again is because there's a very important vote that just went down in the House, and Ron Paul was on the WRONG side. I would love to hear what his rationale was, and your defense of his position on this, which to me, shows his true colors. Talk is cheap, but his votes say a lot more than his rhetoric. This particular vote was on whether or not to table the Kucinich bill on impeachment of Cheney. The bottom line is that Paul has stated that Cheney hasn't done anything impeachable. That boggles the mind, especially since Paul didn't have any problem voting for the impeachment of Clinton over a relatively minor point in comparison (blow job vs. illegal wars and hundreds of thousands dead). I don't defend Clinton either, btw, who is as much a part of The Problem as any president has been, Bush included.
I sincerely hope that you and the other Ron Paul supporters here will take a long and hard look at the following discussion over at Rigorous Intuition (note: there are Ron Paul supporters there who have now changed their positions after learning about this).
Ron Paul votes for impeachment (of Clinton, but not Cheney)

Respect for the Constitution
Nina,
First, here is a video of Dr. Paul expressing his support for impeachment investigations last March:
Second, here is the reason Dr. Paul reluctantly voted to table Mr. Kucinich's resolution. Dr. Paul is consistently principled and remains so. As you said - talk is cheap. A *bunch* of Republicans voted with Kucinich, not because of what they believe, but as a cheap ploy at playing politics - making a mockery of the Constitution in the process.
Here is Dr. Paul's explanation, in his own words:

Nice reply to Nina
I agree that any article that starts out lambasting a person because of their looks just needs to immediately go to the trash, the writer has no integrity. Just as calling Nina an idiot for even referencing such an article as to why Ron Paul is or is not a good presidential candidate would have been in poor taste.
Instead you expressed facts as to where Congressman Paul has placed his beliefs, his congressional votes , and his INTEGRITY!! And you cordially invited Nina to really educate herself about Mr. Paul. Then if she doesn't like him as a candidate it will come from her disagreements with his views and beliefs, not his looks.
You have much more patience and tolerance than I would have been able to muster Mr. Nystrom, and you succinctly covered many of Ron Paul's positions. I know he is the only candidate that I can vote for and still sleep at night. I think he is the only candidate that hasn't sold out to the "powers that be" and "big money", and is perhaps America's last chance to survive, and perhaps the world as we know it.
PS for Nina.
Three other positions of Congressman Paul; Get rid of the IRS and the Federal Reserve Bank (both unconstitutional) and get our fiat currency (also unconstitutional) back to something asset based (like gold) to stop our monetary inflation which is a stealth way for a government to steal from it's citizens. You need to start hitting the books. Finals coming up soon.
Ron Paul
Ron Paul is the only candidate that has a perfect voting record that proves he actually upholds his oath to defend the constitution, as none others do.
The American electorate has been propagandized by 100 years of govt benefitted educrats seeking ever more tax dollars for increasinly poor and in many cases dis-information regarding our govt's 100 year record of giving the peoples powers and rights over to the govt privileged corps that buy them with campaign contributions.
There were no monopoly cartels until govt gave them the privilege.
The socalled Robber Barons did seek to build monopolies against the increasing smaller competition and went to govt to solve their problems.
So much of what has been taught us in school or by the elite owned media is pure lies.
If you have the intellectual honesty to really learn the truth of American history and economics go to mises.org where you can download MP3's and video lectures that will set you free, and give you exactly the view that the elite monied powers who control our Govt dont want you to know and have spent billions to prevent it.
mises.org is the premier not for profit website that lays out in simple terms exactly what the founders intended and the who's, why's and when's of just how far we have strayed from founding ideals to enrich fatcats on the backs of the common man.
Extremism is in the eye of the beholder
I don't think politicians get any more extreme than the former communists turned neo-conservatives who run the Bush admin, have raped the Constitution and are determined to start WWIII. America will never be the same, certainly never as free unless things change now. Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate running who is not controlled by AIPAC and Military Industrial Media Complex.
If I had a choice between neo-con godfather Norman Podhoretz' version of the future (hint he wants the US to bomb Iran NOW) vs. David Dukes,. I would take Dukes vision hands down.
Instead of relying on the mainstream controlled media for your views, take an hour and go to the respective web-sites of each man and then tell me which man has America's interests at heart.
Your TV is lying. Turn it off and start a relationship with Reality.
Neechee
hmmm..
Your going to have to "look" farther than a hit-piece. Look up Ron Pauls wiki, go to his campaign site, actually "read" the constitution. Then go watch the news on tv. That feeling in your stomach....it what happens when you realize just how little control of your life you actually have. Just how far the people have been led away from the water. In years past it wasn't as big an issue , but now we are at a tipping point and this country needs to make a serious decision. One of the paths is doomed to fail, horribly, its easy to recognize.... it's the one we're on. Good luck to you on your educational journey ...avoidance will not make it go away.

As far as a wacko group supporting Paul... it has nothing to do with Paul,or the oppisite is true. Reality is it means nothing , Paul does not endorse them, period. Even the wacko's have to pick a candidate, the thing about Paul's message is it attracts people from ALL walks of life and isolates none.

Thanks, yooper
